The UK’s Jorja Smith today releases her new single ‘GO GO GO’, the third sample from her upcoming second album Falling or Flying due for release on September 29.
The song sees Smith embrace an indie-pop-rock soundscape, a genre we are not used to hearing from her, but it is a tribute to the musical loves of her teenage years such as Jaws, The Kooks and Bombay Bicycle Club. Like everything she does, it is a commanding creation, with a compelling beat and vibe that feels both earthy and polished at the same time. Lyrically it tells of leaving a lover who has betrayed her trust, a theme which is showcased in the music video, also out today. Shot in Marseille, France by Amber Grace Johson, it sees Smith leave her cheating lover before losing herself in a night club.
“'GO GO GO' is kind of a f you song. Why do people have to kiss and tell, kind of vibe,” Smith says. “I’m in my little alternative bag, but I’ve always kind of been in it. People might be like, ‘I didn’t expect this’, but I’m like: ‘well, I would!’” .
‘GO GO GO’ follows the single ‘Try Me’ and ‘Little Things’ all lifted from her upcoming second album Falling or Flying. Released on September 29, it is her first album in five years and comes after a period of growth and reflection which she says has allowed her to come into herself and be more in control of the person she is and the music she creates.
Smith is a remarkable talent who creates music that is simply next level. Warm, emotive, deep and with a connection is that is almost unexplainable, it burrows into your soul and just never lets go. Based on what we have heard so far, Falling or Flying is shaping up to be one of the greatest albums of 2023 and Smith’s star is only going to rise further.
