Acclaimed British singer-songwriter Jorja Smith has announced she will release her eagerly anticipated second album falling or flying on September 29.
Preceded by two singles, the moody, cinematic R&B-pop ‘Try Me’ and the uplifting jazz-soul-pop-R&B ‘Little Things’, falling or flying is an incredible mix of jazz, soul and R&B as well as incorporating funk, pop and house sonics. Coming five years after her debut album Lost & Found, the album is a statement that Smith has arrived - an artist that is in full command of her artistry, her self and is ready to take on the world.
“Despite it all, it's definitely a journey I've just started. That's what's crazy. It's only just begun,” Smith says. “[The album] touches on breakups, relationships with my friends, relationships with old friends, relationships with myself. It's definitely about a lot of relationships, but every song I write I can sing it to myself."
Smith first impressed herself on the global consciousness in 2016 when her first single ‘Blue Lights’ charted across the world. Her stunning voice and musical versatility that sees her authentically inhabit everything from R&B to pop to soul to jazz quickly made her one of the hottest new talents in music, coming fourth on BBC Music’s Sound of 2017 and the following year winning the Critics Choice Award at the Brits. Her 2018 debut album Lost & Found hit number 3 in the UK, number 13 in Australia, number 41 in the US as well as hitting the charts across Europe and in New Zealand.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest young musical artists in the UK today, falling or flying promises to be Jorja Smith at her absolute greatest, and one of the finest albums of the year. “This album is like my brain,” Smith says. “There’s always so much going on but each song is definitely a standstill moment."
