Naarm/Melbourne based artist Yorke has returned with her first new music in two years, the single ‘love on the run.’
Co-written by Yorke with Lucy Healey, who has written for some of pop’s biggest stars including Madison Beer, Lisa and FINNEAS, ‘love on the run’ sees Yorke continuing to develop her sound into the electronic pop realm. With a brooding, late night drive feel the the pared back verses allows Yorke’s gorgeous vocals take centre stage before a delicious waterfall of sparkling synths tumble through the chorus .
The single is an indication of the direction Yorke plans her music to take in the future after spending the last two years since the release of her ten feet tall EP cocooned in a state of creative growth.
“Sonically, I think of the new world as the redemption of my 20’s,” she says. “I just really wanted to create music people could exercise, party, drive or get ready to, as I was sick of being sad and wanted to regain control. It’s the first time since starting the Yorke project that I haven’t felt ashamed to say, ‘Hey, I love writing and listening to pop music more than anything.’”
Also out now is the music video for ‘love on the run’ directed by Kyle Caulfield (Peach PRC, Royel Otis, G Flip). Featuring two versions of Yorke, one of which has committed a crime and is on the run from the police, we are left guessing as to which version is actually the criminal. It highlights the duality of women as well the complexity of growing into your 20s, a decade that arguably features the biggest highs and lows of our life.
“Some days I feel great and confident, and other days I’m feeling low, vulnerable and anxious - but there is power in both,” Yorke says of the video. “Through the two characters in the video, we got to explore these feelings more in depth, whilst simultaneously portraying a heightened superhero/villain story narrative in a Gotham style universe.”
“We wanted to find a way to study and portray the concept of good vs evil, in a camp/supervillain aesthetic,” director Caulfield adds. “We were really attached to themes driven by colour, production design, we wanted it to look sleek with a high polish, but still resemble classic superhero and detective films.”
Releasing her first single ‘Wake This City’ in 2019, Yorke has since dropped two EPs, garnered over 43 million streams globally and supported legendary artists including Amy Shark, The Veronicas, Peach PRC, San Cisco and Lewis Capaldi. Across October and November Yorke will be supporting Kita Alexander on her Young In Love Tour. With more music soon to come, this next chapter in Yorke’s career is shaping up to be one of her best.
