Australia’s Lara Andallo today returns with her new single ‘Head To Toe’, the first new music from the rising star in two years.
One of the leading lights in the Australian burgeoning R&B scene since her debut in 2019, Andallo has over the last few years spent time self reflecting and experimenting with her sounds and now launches a new chapter with ‘Head to Toe’, sounding more confident and assured than ever.
The song is an absolute gem, with Andallo remaining true to her R&B roots while incorporating pop, electronica, hip hop and trap into the mix. Lyrically the song explores Andallo’s fluidity and duality as both a person and in her sexuality. “I can give your girl butterflies / Have her texting like ‘boy bye’ / She want my lovin’,” she sings.
"‘Head To Toe’ was the first song I ever wrote where I didn't hold myself back from saying certain things or try to hide parts of myself that I felt people wouldn't like,” Andallo says. “This record quickly became one of my favourite demos at the time, and I didn't realise why I loved it so much was because I finally let myself be. The first verse was written from my more masculine/tomboy side, whereas verse two was expressing my femininity.”
Also out today is the video directed by Melanie Or that highlights and contrasts Andallo’s masculine and feminine sides.
“I already knew as I was writing it in this way that I wanted to do a music video showing the contrast between these two sides, but also show how my aura and power never changes,” she says. ”I had this initial idea of having two distinct and contrasting looks on a rotating podium, but then from there my creative director and I really went in on conceptualising the video, from the lighting, to the props, movement…everything was intentional and had a purpose. This music video really feels like a proper introduction to who I am. It just captures my duality so well.”
To celebrate her return to music, Andallo will be performing a headline show in Sydney on June 15 at the Lansdowne Hotel from 7:30pm. Tickets are on sale now.
Andallo has been one of the defining voices in the Australian R&B scene since 2019, a scene that has not had the attention or visibility in line with the genre’s global popularity. Her debut EP For Her was released in 2020 and her single ‘When The Lights Go Out’ has accumulated over 1 million streams to date. She has toured with Baker Boy and also UK producer Joel Corry and is steadily building up acclaim and popularity not just in Australia but globally. She is a truly exciting musical innovator and this new era is set to be her most impressive yet.
