New Zealand singer-songwriter-poet Indy (full name Indy Yelich) has released her debut single ‘Threads’, a mesmerising exploration of the joy and messiness of young love.
Co-written by Yelich and produced by Josh Grant, ‘Threads’ is a beguiling mix of electronic pop and synthpop with a piano foundation. It is delivered in such a beautifully mellow, gentle way - all the more powerful for its subtlety - that listening to the song is like falling into a warm, all-encompassing embrace. It is a truly remarkable track that feels completely unique whilst remaining familiar at the same time.
“‘Threads’ is about the fear of letting a relationship consume me,” Yelich says. “I wrote this song when I was going through a very on-off relationship for years. When I think of this song I think of a passionate argument, miscommunication, the excitement of New York City night life. A toxic, messy love affair. Flashbacks of the moments shared together vs being out surrounded by friends, always caught in between. This song is so special to me as it depicts what being in love at 23 feels like; chaotic, hopeful, passionate.”
Growing up in the Auckland suburb of Devonport with her family, including big sister Ella (AKA Lorde), Yelich became interested in poetry and songwriting after realising she was “always more interested in creating the storyline than being in someone else’s”. At 18 she left New Zealand for Los Angeles before settling in New York and has now launched her solo music career, saying “I've always had a very distinct voice but now, at 23, I finally feel I know exactly what I’m trying to say.”
Yelich is a supremely talented young artist and on the strength of ‘Threads’ alone it is clear she has the potential to be a major star. Expect more incredibly good music from Yelich in the months to come.
‘Threads’ is out now via tmwrk records. You can buy and stream here.
