Rising New Zealand born, New York based singer-songwriter Indy (full name Indy Yelich) has released her debut EP Threads.
Having previously released two poetry books, Yelich has spent the past four years creating Threads across New Zealand and the USA. The end result is a remarkable collection of music which solidifies Yelich as one of the greatest new talents in music today. Previous singles, the gentle electronica of ‘Threads’, the harder pop-hip-hop sounds of ‘Killer’ and the lush nostalgia of ‘Hometown’, are still as fresh and addictive as ever and are joined by two new tracks.
The first new track ‘Hero’ is another subtle electronica track with synths and a powerful chorus. Lyrically it is a heartbreaking story of unrequited love and realising you will never have the person you want. “In the back of the room, I'm the last one to know / I never stood a chance” she sings.
The latest single ‘Freeloader’ is the final new track on the EP. An upbeat pop track, it showcases Yelich’s more playful, witty side as it tells of a visitor who stays far too long without picking up the hints they need to leave. “What's up with these boys always thinkin' they're God? / Like they got the world on a string / First they smoke all your weed, then they say that you're mean,” she sings.
“I feel like this song is a fun ode to all the boys who have been assholes to me in the past,” Yelich says of ‘Freeloader’. “Boys who step over you and take advantage of your giving nature. It felt so cathartic to write!”
With Threads, Yelich has created music that has an incredible power to connect with your soul and never let go. The soundscape is diverse, warm and utterly mesmerising. She is an outstanding talent and with a debut release this good, Yelich’s music career is shaping up to be something very special indeed.
