PREMIERE: Major Zulu releases new single 'Music Sounds Better With You'

Sydney based soul artist Major Zulu will release her new single ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ on Thursday, but today you can listen to the song exclusively here on Women In Pop.
Written by Zulu and Andrew Morrison, ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ is a warm, smooth melding of pop, soul, R&B and jazz with Zulu’s gorgeous vocal bringing both a tenderness and longing to her story. In a world of two minute songs designed for TikTok, it’s running length of four and a half minutes is an additional delight, allowing you to truly immerse in its soundscape.
There is a serious message amongst the sonics of stepping back and appreciating life, particularly the simple things like music and loved ones. ‘We are living in a world / Of who is who and who has what / All I’m asking is to be happy,’ Zulu sings.
“In the whirlwind of modern life, it's easy to lose sight of the simple joys. ‘Music Sounds Better With You' is a heartfelt reflection on reclaiming those moments,” Zulu says. “My partner and I lead busy lives, and sometimes it feels like we’re just ships passing in the night. But there's a constant, a refuge, our regular meeting point, the record player in our little home basement. Whether it’s just the two of us or surrounded by friends and family, the experience is always the same: an equal exchange where everyone shares and listens. In those moments, music reveals the truest versions of ourselves.”
Growing up under colonial rule in Zambia where her father was imprisoned for his beliefs, Zulu’s music is deeply personal and examines love, loss, relationships and hope. She released her EP The DIY Project Called Life in 2021 and across her career has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning band Basement Jaxx and shared stages with artists such as Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, James Morrison, Paolo Nutini, and Earth, Wind & Fire. In the last six months she has released the singles ‘Honey Honey’ and ‘Down Under’, both singles, alongside ‘Music Sounds Better With You’, will feature on her new EP I Am Major Zulu which is due for release in May this year.
