Punjabi-Australian artist Parvyn releases her new single ‘Free To Be Myself’ this Wednesday, but today you can listen to it exclusively on Women In Pop.

Parvyn’s first release since her 2021 ARIA nominated album Sa, ‘Free To Be Myself’ is a joyous disco-soul-funk infused pop track with a hefty dash of nostalgia and hints of her South Asian heritage, as Parvyn sings of the love and balance she has found with her partner Josh Bennett. The song is the first taste of her new album Maujuda, which will be released on 1 November.

"I want this song to represent the joy you can find in living an authentic life but also give hope that all people can live freely and safely in this world,” Parvyn says.

The music video for ‘Free To Be Myself’ was helmed by award winning director Alice Yang who is known for bringing the stories, experiences and existence of Asian diaspora to the screen. Echoing the theme of the lyrics, the music video shares the importance of friendships and surrounding yourself with those you love.

Parvyn has been part of the music industry since she was a young child, touring globally with her father Dya Singh from the age of seven. Singh is a renowned performer of Sikh religious music and played at some of the world’s biggest world music festival, as well as at esteemed venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 2010, Parvyn became a founding member of the Australian group The Bombay Royale, who originally started as a Bollywood covers band before branching out into original music. They enjoyed international success, with their music appearing in hit TV show Better Call Saul and the computer game Far Cry 4.

In 2017, after the band went on a break, Parvyn launched her solo career, with music inspired by jazz, rock, pop and soul. She dropped her critically acclaimed debut solo album Sa in 2021, which earned a ARIA Award nomination for Best World Music Album at the 2022 Awards.

A truly eclectic artist who brings all elements of her heritage and musical background into her artistry whilst remaining resolutely outside any genre box, Parvyn’s music is a life affirming experience. After 3 years away from releasing music, ‘Free To Be Myself’ is an intoxicating return for Parvyn, and an exciting new chapter in her career - not to mention an impressive preview of what her second album promises to be. The single will be released on Wednesday, but for now you can listen to it exclusively on Women In Pop below.
