Shahrae releases new single 'Control'
Today marks the release of the latest single from Adelaide born, Melbourne based Shahrae (full name Shah-Rae Weaver) ‘Control’.
Her second single release of 2020, ‘Control’ is a powerful, immersive electronica track full of pounding beats, distorted vocals and a brilliant knack of completely changing direction in a snap - such as the booming chorus immediately jumping into a few seconds of lush, mellow strings, or the melodies switching into a 1980s, New Wave vibe. It is an invigorating listen.
“I wrote ‘Control’ about feeling out of control,” Weaver says of the song. “Feeling like a part of yourself that you dislike is the one in control, watching over everything and making decisions while you just kinda sit and watch. My co-producer, Rudy, sent me the bass track and verse one just came to me, I almost felt like it wrote itself. I wanted to write about feeling as if a part of yourself that you don’t really like, or maybe even your mental health, like depression, anxiety, if the one pulling the strings and taking the steering wheel. It’s the one in your head making decisions while you just watch and suffer the consequences.”
Of the atmospheric, moody vibe of the song Weaver explains: “I wanted the song to have this darker, creepy, on edge feeling, while being just a little weird. The distorted vocals make me think of this anxious feeling. The scream, yelling, telling someone to stand back because you don’t know who is in control anymore.”
Shahrae started her music career at just 15 when she started busking. The following year, she launched a YouTube channel posting acoustic covers of her favourite artists which has since accrued over 15,000 subscribers. She released her debut EP Awkward in 2019 and went on the win the Asia-Pacific category in the Vans Musicians Wanted competition.
‘Control’ takes Sharae’s music into a new realm and she is an artist to keep a close watch on into next year.
