Sarah Saint James releases new single, TikTok sensation 'Mad At God'
Sydney based singer-songwriter Sarah Saint James today launches her new single ‘Mad At God’, a few short weeks after the track blew up on TikTok.
An anthem for the LGBTQIA+ community that details Saint James’ struggles coming to terms with her own sexuality, she uploaded a snippet of the song to TikTok straight after recording it, only to see gain close to 400k views and 125k likes in under a week. The song’s heartfelt lyrics - “ I’m mad at god, cause I prayed last night and I woke up the same size / I fell in love, with a girl this time, and my mum says that’s not right,” - resonated with TikTok users who created their own videos to the track en masse.
The gentle, almost dreamy verses erupt into a moody, intense chorus backed with industrial beats as Saint James pleas in an impassioned vocal “I’m mad at God / Cause if he exists why do I still feel like this?” Written over Facetime with Bri Clark and produced by Nat Sherwood, the lyrics reflect Saint James’ teenage years as she grappled with being different. "I wanted to write a song from the perspective of fifteen year old me, sitting alone on my bathroom floor, wishing I was a different person,” she says. “I wanted to speak for people that haven't been able to put it into words before. The lyrics are very literal because it was really just fifteen year old me saying everything I wanted to say but was too scared to. Nat and I have a great friendship, and when I went into the production session I had a very clear vision of what I wanted. I wanted something that made me feel, that was light and pretty, but also dark and hard hitting. And he captured exactly what I wanted.”
‘Mad at God’ follows on from Saint James’ three 2020 singles, 'outta this world (f*ckboys from space)’, ‘Big Boy’ and ‘DBE’ plus her collaboration with Paces ‘Back Around’, all dripping with her particular sense of wry attitude and whipsmart lyrics, and has seen her accumulate over 150k streams on Spotify globally. With her debut EP slated for release later this year and her ability to reflect the emotions of the generation of today, Saint James is shaping up to be one of the breakthrough artists to pay serious attention to in 2021.
