Riiki Reid releases new EP 'Skin'
New Zealand’s Riiki Reid has released her new single ‘Skin’, the final instalment in her latest EP of the same name and completing a trilogy of EPs which began in 2022.
‘Skin’ is a beautifully rich pop ballad with an anthemic chorus with Reid’s emotive vocal detailing the pain of walking away from a relationship and having to learn how to function again without that person who was such a big part of your life: ‘Walking you out of my step / Thinking you out of my head…Feeling you off of my skin.’
It completes the storyline of the Skin EP which see Reid explores the personal, love, relationships and heartbreak. Last year’s ‘Home With Me’ (one of Women In Pop’s Top 50 tracks of 2023) is a gorgeous guitar based ballad which speaks of missing someone when you are far away. The delicate beats and husky vocals of January’s ‘Like You’, featuring Balu Brigada, see the couple still in love but realising they cannot continue: “I can’t see the world through the tears in your eyes.” ‘Skin’ completes the journey with Reid walking away and starting afresh.
Skin is the final EP in a trilogy of EPs from Reid that explores different facets of her life and creativity, with a distinct soundscape for each EP. 2022’s Newer Oxygen featured edgy, indie-alt pop beats with elements of new wave and punk on the spacey ‘The Dream State’, and chilled out vibes and distorted vocals on ‘Say You Want Me’.
Crash & Collide, also from 2022, saw Reid embrace dance pop, with ‘Drive’ and ‘We’re A Different Kind’ inspired by delicious 1980s synthpop and electronica, while ‘The City’ is a swirling, trancey dance track.
Reid is the kind of artist that continually suprises and impresses with every new release. Effortlessly slipping into whatever genre inspires her, she creates music for both the full on party moments and also the quieter introspective moments. She will be appearing at the Homegrown festival in Wellington this month, and with more music on the way this year, 2024 is going to see Riiki Reid scale even greater musical heights.
Skin is out now via Warner Music Australia. You can buy and stream here.
