PREMIERE: Tia Tamora releases debut single 'Picnic'
Australian newcomer Tia Tamora tomorrow releases her debut single ‘Picnic’ but today you can listen to the track exclusively on Women In Pop before its general release.
Based on the classic Australian novel Picnic At Hanging Rock, the track is a moody, dark alt-pop track which steers a course from sparse, alluring verses to a heavy, distorted, intimidating chorus: “If you aren't invited get fucked” Tamora sings. Woven into the track are field noises recorded on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, where Tamora lives, including local kookaburras, dogs, flies and magpies.
“‘Picnic’ came to me like a trance out of nowhere,” Tamora says. “I knew within writing the first verse I was onto something and from there it just flowed freely without thinking about it. Its creation felt foreboding and curious and what a mystery in the Australian outback would look and sound like. The verses are somewhat an ode to Joan Lindsay and her haunting, dreamy story while the chorus violently jolts you out of that alluring dream-state haze. I feel that ‘Picnic’ is a surreal anthem for the idealist, a puzzle of light and shade…and perplexing picnic matters!”
Aged just 19, Tamora was always drawn to the undercurrents present in the Australian landscape and is now using it to inform her writing and baroque-gothic style of pop. Currently recording her debut album in Melbourne, ‘Picnic’ is the first taste of the unpredictable, beautiful, challenging and emotive musical world Tia Tamora will invite us into.
