Sydney singer-songwriter Rageflower (real name Madeleine Powers) recently released her debut single ‘Still Calling’ and today the music video premieres exclusively on Women In Pop before its general release.
The song is a indie-pop-rock delight which switches between quieter, reflective verses and a full-blooded, powerful chorus. The song also carries hints of the early 2000s indie sound and will feel like home to fans of that era of music.
“Essentially, ‘Still Calling’ is about the journey back to self and healing the inner child,” Rageflower says. “It’s also about the consequences of suppressing trauma with destructive coping mechanisms. When I wrote the song I was in a dark place, I really felt that I had let myself down and that I had wasted my potential on temporary highs. At the time I was listening to a lot of music from my emo high school years (Bright Eyes, Tonight Alive, Sum 41) and connecting with the person I used to be, which really inspired the sound. I wanted to write a hyper dualistic song with verses that felt confessional and vulnerable but choruses that felt destructive and nihilistic.”
Directed by Zoe Dubuc, the video perfectly encapsulates the sense of feeling vulnerable, unhappy within yourself and disconnected from the world around you. Featuring Rageflower feeling out of place at a party and playing guitar half submerged in water, the video was filmed at her friend’s house in Newtown, Sydney and her aunt’s pool.
With a lot more exciting music to come from Rageflower, she is definitely an artist to put on your ‘one to watch’ list. For now, enjoy below the premiere off ‘Still Calling’ exclusively on Women In Pop.
