PREMIERE: Tanya George releases new single 'Serious'
Melbourne artist Tanya George has had a powerful journey in music since she released her debut EP Sonder in 2018. The same year she won the Queenscliff Busking Competition, fast forward to 2021 and she was hugely successful in another completion - but this time it was The Voice Australia where she made the top 5 on Team Rita Ora.
Her discography is a diverse collection of sounds, ranging from electronic pop, through to indie, R&B and jazz, and tomorrow, she launches a new era of her music with the release of the single ‘Serious’, and today you can listen to the single exclusively on Women In Pop.
Starting with a funky guitar, the song tumbles into a delicious blend of pop, jazz and 1970s funk-rock, with George singing of her frustration at the dismissive attitude of a partner who has walked away from their relationship. “You were the one that got up and ran away / I was the one happy to stay / Why can’t you take me serious?,” she sings.
“I’ve often felt dismissed and unheard—both as a woman and as an independent artist in the music industry,” George says. “‘Serious’ was born from the frustration of people within the music industry not taking my dreams seriously, as well as from a personal relationship.”
‘Serious’ is the first taste of George’s upcoming debut album Contrast which is due to be released next year. It will be the latest achievement in a career which is going from strength to strength. After her time on The Voice Australia she has had further success in competitions, including a 4th placement at the Gwangju Busking World Cup in South Korea in 2023 and a semi-final appearance the same year at the Bluesfest Busking competition. She has also performed at major music festivals including St Kilda Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Womadelaide, and the Queenscliff Music Festival.
With a four-octave range, George has a voice that is a marvel to listen to as well as being incredibly embracing and connective. With her acclaimed vocal looping skills and her ability to authentically genre-shift with ease, her music is fascinating and mesmerising. drawing you deep into a world where you are never sure where the song will go next, but you are hanging on to every note to find out.
