PREMIERE: Lenka returns with new single 'Silhouette’

Australian singer-songwriter Lenka will release her new single ‘Silhouette’ tomorrow, but today you can listen to it and watch the music video exclusively here on Women In Pop.
Following on from single 'One Moment' released in April, ‘Silhouette’ is an absolute treat, bringing the sounds of 1980s synthpop and electropop into 2023. Full of addictive melodies and shimmering synths it compels you to move and drown in the nostalgic sounds of the 80s. The beats are paired with a gorgeous vocal performance from Lenka, moving from a high pitch to a tone that expertly conveys the sense of emptiness and frustration displayed in the lyrics as she sings of feeling like you are fading away.
"This song is my delicious 1980’s pop jam about being worn down by life to the point where you feel like you're disappearing and becoming numb. Almost a nihilistic feeling, but in a joyful way!” she says. “It's fun to get creative with your more negative emotions and wear them like a costume, turn them into armour.”
The music video, directed by Adam Jordan, continues with the 1980s vibe, taking inspiration from 1980s icons Whitney Houston, Annie Lennox and Kylie Minogue as well as the ‘glamazon’ portrayal of women common in advertisements, TV and film in the 1980s.
"This was such a fun video to shoot. The goal was to evoke the feel of 80s glamour, the nostalgia, but without the cheese,” Jordan says. “Lenka absolutely smashed it with the clothing options, my favourite shots became the black sparkly top with the backlight, the perfect mix of the glamour and nostalgia vibe we were going for."
Lenka first came to prominence as an actor on multiple TV shows in Australia in the 1990s, including Home and Away, G.P. and All Saints. She moved into music in 2004 as the lead singer for electro-rock band Decoder Ring before launching her solo career in 2008. Her debut single ‘The Show’ became a global hit, and her music has since been used in a range of media including ads for Microsoft and Coca Cola, TV shows like Ugly Betty and Greys Anatomy and films including Easy A and Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging.
Lenka creates beautiful music that has a foundation in electropop but incorporates various other genres including folk, trip-hop and experimental pop. It is expertly created music and will move you in ways you aren’t quite sure why, but leaves you entirely under Lenka’s spell. ‘Silhouette’ is without question one of her greatest songs and will soon be permanently imprinted on your heart.
