Australian singer, songwriter and producer Caiti Baker returns with her first new music of 2024 with her new single ‘Stay Down’ premiering exclusively on Women In Pop today before it’s general release on 10 April.
‘Stay Down’ is a mesmerising track with an almost primal beat that quickly burrows into your head and heart. Written by Baker and produced by Kuya James, it is a funky, moody R&B-pop track with touches of soul and also electronica. The vocal bursts of “ooh-ooh!” in the chorus are sure to quickly become an ear worm you won’t want to lose.
Lyrically, the song tackles imposter syndrome and self-doubt. ‘Don’t catch me looking in the mirror again / She wanna tell you all of those lies again,” she sings.
“I began to question my purpose as a creative,” Baker says of the story behind the song. “The daunting symptoms of imposter syndrome had begun to surface. I took a breather, prioritised some time in my bedroom studio, pulled up a new instrumental from my co-producer James Mangohig aka Kuya James, and I just processed everything there on the spot. I wrote and recorded “Stay Down” in 4 hours.”
First entering the music scene as one half of electro-soul duo Sietta, Baker has had an incredibly varied career over the past decade with her music touching country, jazz, blue and R&B. In the past few years she has also completed important work behind the scenes, including mentoring young artists, establishing a girl group CLINK with fellow artist Juran Timu, working as a vocal producer with Emily Wurramara, as well as supporting major artists including Jessica Mauboy, George Benson, Pete Murray and Tim Minchin.
‘Stay Down’ is a remarkable track that instantly grabs you on your first listen and you will be hard pressed to not constantly click the repeat button. It will be available everywhere on Wednesday April 10, but for now enjoy this beguiling track below.
‘Stay Down’ will be released on 10 April via Gyrostream. You can pre-save now.
