New Zealand duo Foley (lead singer Ash Wallace and Gabriel Everett) today return with their new single ‘So Personal’ and the video premieres exclusively here on Women In Pop.
The light and breezy summer bop we all need right now, ‘So Personal’ blends pop, R&B and disco and is full of the kind of delicious, addictive, unapologetically pop melodies that is a trademark of every Foley track. Detailing the start of a new relationship and the desire to want more - lead singer Ash Wallace sings “I’d like to know more than your name” - which quickly escalates to instant love.
“We’ve all gone to a party in search of someone, but it’s pretty rare to have that genuine moment where you hit it off so completely that you’re instantly in love,” the duo explain. “As much as ‘So Personal’ is about attraction, it’s also that kinda uncomfortable feeling of should-I-make-a-move-or-not, tripping over your words and generally just being a little starstruck. It’s the crowd disappearing, leaving only you and the prospect of new love behind. In only one night two people can go from strangers to each other’s most trusted confidant - so personal so fast.”
The sun drenched, carefree video was shot at Karioitahi Beach, south of Auckland and directed by Molawin Evangelista. “‘So Personal’ is about the instant attraction and intensity of a new relationship, so initially we had some grand concepts about that for the video,” Foley says. “We’ve been quite hands-on conceptually in a lot of our previous videos so decided to take a step back for this one and let our team envision what the song would translate to on film, which they absolutely nailed. Overall we just wanted to make sure we had a really beautiful, carefree and summer-ey video & we know the team were poring over every line and every word to create it, and boy did they create something stunning! We’re so proud!”
Foley have been releasing music since 2017 and have steadily built a strong following through their honest take on love and relationships teamed with uplifting and life affirming pop. This year has seen the release of their debut EP On My Conscience which peaked at number 10 on the NZ album charts and has attracted millions of streams. The duo are playing some of New Zealand’s biggest festivals over summer and into next year, including Rhythm & Vines and the first ever Peachy Keen Festival that brings together some of New Zealand’s best female artists on one line-up.
