Foley release new single 'Better Than Love'
NZ duo Foley (Ash Wallace and Gabriel Everett) today return with their first new music of 2021 with the single ‘Better Than Love’. A down tempo, mellow electro-tinged pop track it explores the hesitant beginnings of a new relationship and the desire to protect each other from falling too fast - ‘It’s just easier to keep it simple / Keep the label off us,’ Wallace sings.
Created with Foley’s long time collaborators Josh Naley and Jonathan Boyle, ‘Better Than Love’ was written in just a day. “This song was incredibly therapeutic for me - coming from a place of fear and mistrust and finally saying it out loud,” Wallace says of the background to the song. “Gabe has been in a relationship for a long time, and by comparison being thrown into something completely new and terrifying, it's the first time the two of us have had really contrasting experiences like this in our writing. When you have been hurt in the past you get into the mindset that nothing can be as good as it seems. I felt at one point like I shouldn’t try anymore because the way I built love up in my head could never be reached in reality. Self-sabotage is really powerful and you end up manifesting disappointment instead of hoping for something great.”
Foley formed in 2017 as a passion project between the longtime friends. In a male-dominated industry where female vocalists are heavily commodified, Foley have made a point of enforcing equality in the creation of their music, with their songs crafted together in a complete 50/50 split with no one artist being more involved than another. Their debut EP, last year’s On My Conscience, made it’s way into the top 10 on the NZ album charts and scored major success on streaming platforms and NZ radio. With recent stand-out singles ‘Rendezvous’ and ‘So Personal’ setting the stage for their expected second EP, Foley are set to grow their fanbase even more in 2021 with their uncanny knack for producing the kind of pure pop bliss we all love.
‘Better Than Love’ by Foley is out now. You can download on iTunes and stream on Apple Music and Spotify.
