Anangu/Torres Strait Islander artist Miiesha has returned with the single ‘Damaged’, her first new music since 2020s award winning debut album Nyaaringu.

A smooth soul-R&B track produced by LUCIANBLOMKAMP (6lack), with vocal production by Simon Cohen (Justin Bieber), the song is a personal and heartbreaking track about family trauma.

“‘Damaged’ is my most personal song yet, and the most painful for me,” Miiesha says. “It is a song about the broken relationship I have with my mother, and how much I have wanted it to heal, and how much I have tried to fix it, only to find myself hurting more.”

The single’s accompanying music video is also out now and features members of Miiesha’s family and explores the sometimes painful but binding ties of family.

First releasing music in 2019, Miiesha broke through in a major way in 2020 when Nyaaringu was nominated for 5 ARIA Awards, winning Best Soul/R&B Release, as well as well four Queensland Music Awards, a nomination for APRA/AMCOS Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year amongst various other accolades.

With both strength and vulnerability, Miiesha creates music which is intimately personal but also relatable and soon winds its way into your soul. ‘Damaged’ is the first release in the next stage of her musical journey, and will see her dive deeper into her own personal story, exploring the pain and disconnect caused by the broken relationship with her mother, fuelled by grief, trauma and battles with mental health. This era in her musical journey is shaping up to be just as impressive as her debut release and promises to be a highlight of 2021.

‘Damaged’ is out now. You can buy and stream here.
