Two times Grammy nominee K.Flay has kicked off her 2024 with the release of the new single ‘Carsick’.
Her first new music since the release of her fifth album MONO last year, ‘Carsick’ was written and produced by K.Flay and with regular collaborator Jason Suwito (MisterWives, Imagine Dragons, Sir Sly) and was recorded during the MONO sessions
Starting with mellow piano, it quickly transforms into the classic K.Flay sound - hard, distorted beats mixed with electronic synths, creating a song that treads a line between primal, hard rock and delicious electronic dance pop, while remaining beholden to neither.
Lyrically ‘Carsick’ speaks of the moment you realise the chaotic relationship you are in the middle of is not for you anymore. “After all the stops and starts, crashes and carnage / I'm just carsick,” she sings.
“‘Carsick’ is about the moment you want to get off the ride. When the chaos isn’t fun anymore,” K.Flay says. “I tried to capture both the dizzying feeling of being in a toxic relationship and the freedom that comes with leaving it.”
MONO was the first album K.Flay released after losing the hearing in her right ear, an event she references in ‘Carsick’ with the lyric ‘Sirens ringing in my eardrum’. “I started making this record as a person with two working ears. I finished it with only one,” she said in November. MONO covers multiple topics, including the loss of her biological father, her queerness and sudden deafness, and received critical acclaim.
‘Carsick’ drops just before K.Flay hits Australia in February with her Mono In Stereo tour. She will perform a series of headline shows as well as making an appearance at Party in the Paddock festival in Launceston. Tickets are on sale now.
K.Flay never fails to create music that not only defies genre but also remains connective and ‘Carsick’ is a welcome extension to the MONO era. Be sure to see her live this February.
‘Carsick’ is out now via Giant Records. You can buy and stream here.
