Denmark’s Theresa Rex may not be a household name (yet), but over the past few years she has quietly built a career as one of the most successful pop singers on the planet with over a billion global streams to her name. The voice behind monster hits such as ‘Solo Dance’ with Martin Jensen and ‘What I Like About You’ with Jonas Blue, last year Rex hit number one on the US Dance Charts with her collaboration with Afrojack ‘Let Me Go’.
Alongside her major collaborations though, Rex has also established herself as a solo performer with an incredible knack for creating sublime pop tracks driven by her beguilingly unique voice, with last year’s lush synthpop track ‘Say Something’ landing on Women In Pop’s Top 50 Tracks of 2023 list.
Rex has now kicked off 2024 in style with the release of her new single ‘Bad Blood’. Written by Rex with Lasse Baunkilde (Astrid S, Christopher) songwriter Daniel Schulz and produced by Baunkilde, it is a smooth electronic pop track with a chanty chorus and a vocal performance from Rex that is deceptively gentle - and more powerful as a result - as she details the trauma of breaking up with your best friend after a betrayal.
“’Bad Blood’ is the story of two friends – a close friendship in that “blood pact”, ride or die-kind of way,” Rex says. “But also, the song is about the ultimate betrayal, because she stole my boyfriend. I quickly forgot about that guy who cheated, but the loss of that friendship was heartbreaking. She stabbed me in the back and found it extremely hard to realise that this forged bond, I thought we had between us, was so easily broken. Friend break-ups are just one of the things that hurt the most.”
A heartbreak track you can dance the pain away to, it is Rex at her best, mixing raw emotions with infectious beats and melodies to die for.
Rex promises more solo music is on the way this year, and with music as good as ‘Bad Blood’, 2024 is shaping up to be a monumental year her.
‘Bad Blood’ is out now on 2nd Floor via The Orchard. You can buy and stream here.
