One of Australia’s most exciting new talents Aya Yves today releases her second single of 2022, the moving and heartbreaking ‘p.s.’
Co-written with Bri Clark and Pat Byrne (Lola Scott. Beso Palma) with production also handled by Byrne, the track was inspired by the passing of Yves sister in 2021 and explores the themes of grief, hope and love. A beautiful, gentle piano ballad with electro undertones, it is a masterclass in how to create pop music that tackles an important and sensitive topic with heart and soul, allowing the listener to share Yves story, and pain, and relate it to their own lives. It moves you to tears while leaving you entranced by the music and Yves’ remarkable voice.
“I knew back when I wrote ‘Dear E.’ that it was impossible to fit a lifetime of love, now what will be a lifetime of grief, into one song,” Yves explains. “‘p.s.’ is a reflection of that. I will always have more I wish I could have said, and forever will wish there were more memories I could have made with my sister. All I have now is the love that sometimes is too painful to carry - but that’s how I know it was real. The night before writing ‘p.s.’ my sister said she was tired, that she was ready to go. I understood, even if I didn’t like it. I said she didn’t need it, but she had my permission.”
“We did the vocals in one take into a shitty sm57 instrument mic, assuming we’d re-track them later. When it came to finishing the song months later, I knew I wouldn’t be able to recreate the emotion from that day, so the demo vocals are what you’re hearing now. When we finished the demo, it didn’t have a title yet. The same night I showed a friend and they said it gave them ‘Dear E.’ vibes - that’s when I decided to call it ‘p.s.’ ‘p.s.’ gives me a space to let myself feel every bit of it when I need to - now I hope it can do the same for anyone else who might need it. “
Aya Yves has been on an upward trajectory since the release of her debut EP What We Look Like With The Lights On in 2021. She has become an in demand performer with multiple live shows across the country including two shows at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory. From slinky electro to gorgeous ballads, her music has a way of creeping into your soul and Aya Yves is an artist that should be on your playlist now.
