Ashnikko releases new single 'Worms' and announces debut album 'Weedkiller' will be out in June
Pop disruptor Ashnikko has released her new single ‘Worms’, alongside announcing her hotly anticipated debut alum Weedkiller will be released on June 2.
‘Worms’ is a bouncy alt pop track, which incorporates elements of reggae and R&B. Lyrically it is a darker look at self-sabotage, while trying to fight it by attempting to look on the bright side. “Play my life like a video game / I don't mind, I'm driving through flames…Brand new day, got a brand new grin,” she sings.
‘Worms’ follows on from February’s thrash-rock track ‘You Make Me Sick!’ which marked her first release in over a year. Both tracks will feature on Ashnikko’s debut album Weedkiller which is due to be released on June 2. A collection of the genre-blending music she is renowned for, Weedkiller is in many ways a concept album, with Ashnikko building a dystopian fantasy that tells the story of a fae civilisation occupied and destroyed by machines that feed on organic matter, with the faerie protagonist seeking revenge by becoming part machine. A metaphor for the destruction of our environment and the ever encroaching reach of technology, it is an album that is bold, unique and captivating.
"My bioluminescent heart is glowing,” Ashnikko says. “My post-apocalyptic fae world is here for you to journey into. My wings have been ripped out, but I’ve built them anew using WEEDKILLER machine parts. I am the one sent here to eliminate you, WEEDKILLER."
First releasing music in 2017, Ashnikko has steadily become one of the biggest alt-pop singers in the world, with over six million streams on Spotify per month. Switching between rap, R&B, and stripped back pop, she has collaborated with major artists including Grimes, Kelis and Yung Baby Tate. Weedkiller is set to be confirmation of her fearless ability to experiment and innovate, and produce music that truly stands out from the rest.
