PREMIERE: Velvet Bloom return with soulful new song 'My Love'

Four piece Australian band Velvet Bloom, headed up by vocalist and songwriter Maddy Herbert, return with their first new music in a year this Friday with the single ‘My Love’. Today, you can listen exclusively to the track here on Women In Pop.

Alongside writing the lyrics, ‘My Love’ sees Herbert stepping into the role of producer in what is a gloriously uplifting and soul stirring song, with mixing and engineering from band mate Alex Marko. Containing influences from Motown, soul, jazz and pop it has an intimate, warmly familiar feel that connects with cherished memories of music past, but also remains excitingly fresh and contemporary.

Herbert’s vocal performance is pure delight, with an expressive, slightly husky tone in the verses, while in the chorus she showcases her impressive range. Lyrically ‘My Love’ is, perhaps not surprisingly, a pure love song that is about “accepting and loving people for who they are, meeting them where they are at and growing together”. ‘You’re my love and we’re stronger as a team / So take my hand I’ll show you all the ways to make me feel seen,” Herbert sings.

“‘My Love’ was the one of those tracks that took shape super quickly,” the band says. “The demos felt very similar to the final product in terms of instrumentation, vocals and arrangement. When refining the mix, Alex was influenced by artists like Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings/Daptone Records, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and other makers of that classic soul sound in that realm. This song is so fun to sing and you can audibly hear the smile on my face throughout the track… which makes sense with it being a love song. We are so proud of the drum groove and production on this track; paired with that powerful rolling organ, it really serves this genre of music and the song itself!”

Made up of Herbert, Alex Marko (guitars, bass), Miguel Hutton (organ/keyboard) and Nic Morton (drums), Velvet Bloom have been releasing music since the late 2010s and in 2022 dropped their debut EP Glimmer. Its success saw them tour across Australia, garner airplay from Triple J and the ABC, and appear on the ABC television show Spicks & Specks.

Effortlessly spanning indiepop, rock, soul, pop and acoustic, Velvet Bloom make music that you quite simply want to melt into, like a warm hug. Connective, with production that lets the melodies, vocals and lyrics shine, their return with ‘My Love’ is to be celebrated. Available to stream and buy on all platforms from 12 July, until then you can listen to it exclusively below now.
