Today Sydney-based pop singer-songwriter BOI (full name Anna Buckingham) releases new single ‘So Long’. A moody, funky pop track dripping with attitude and hints of 1980s new wave, it is BOI’s fourth single of 2020 and come off the back of her debut EP, April’s eclectic and supremely confident Look At Me Now.
In tune with it’s dark vibe, the lyrics are a personal and intimate conversation about dark emotions. “The song is about not giving up and is a tribute to getting knocked down and finding a way to get back up again,” BOI explains. “The song was born out of the blinding darkness and bleak state of despair as I tried to re-humanise myself. The empowerment came out in the lyrics which came out effortlessly and were recorded all in one take as if it were like a diary entry, verbatim style, articulating the injustice, betrayal and pain I was experiencing, like a conversation.”
BOI the solo artist first emerged in 2019 with the singles ‘Imaginary Boys’ and the quite frankly nothing short of stunning ‘Sick Of Loving You’. 2020 saw her consolidate that incredible start and in little more than a year has racked up over five million streams worldwide. This year has also seen her writing music with artists such as Alice Ivy, Bliss n Eso, GODLANDS, PINK ZINC, Justin Stanley (PRINCE), and Printz Board (Black Eyed Peas). Her exceptional talent has resulted in her first ever ARIA Award nomination this year, with a nod in the Best Dance Release category for Alice Ivy’s track ‘Don’t Sleep’ on which BOI co-wrote and featured, along with imbi the girl. With music as good as BOI consistently puts out into the world, we suspect it won’t be her last brush with awards.
BOI returns to live performance on Thursday 19th November when she appears at the HEAPS GAY PARTY at The Lass O Gowrie, Newcastle. Tickets on sale here now.
