Sarah Belkner releases new single 'Houdini'

Singer-songwriter-producer Sarah Belkner today returns with the release of her new single ‘Houdini’, the second taste of her upcoming album The Apple due for release on October 27.

A gorgeously warm track, ‘Houdini’ brings in multiple sounds and inspirations, from rock and pop through to jazz and even dashes of 1980s new wave synthpop. Lyrically it explores the complexity of creativity and the challenges artists face when creating their art: "Been broken into too many times / Little chameleon gets tired / Changing colour like nine lives.”

“The intensity of being creative sometimes can be overwhelming, and the pursuit to put out work is very challenging,” Belkner says. “But don’t give up! That’s the only thing that will mean you don’t move forward." The song’s title she says refers to how artists, just like famed escapologist Harry Houdini, create their best work when they break free from self-doubt and creative barriers. "If we replaced the word ‘Houdini’ with ‘Muse,’ it all makes a lot of sense,” she says.

Belkner has been releasing music for close to a decade now with her debut album But You Are, But It Has released in 2017. Alongside her own solo career, she is a musical multi-hyphenate also working as an arranger composer, studio producer, instrumentalist and musical director as well as a touring musician for other artists. Across her career she has worked with some of the biggest names in Australian music including Missy Higgins, Neil Finn, Sarah Blasko, OLYMPIA, NGAIIRE, and Tim Minchin.

‘Houdini’ follows single ‘Salt’, released in July, and both will be included on her second album The Apple, her first album in six years. Inspirational and illuminating, it promises to be a very special album. Belkner has always created music that will burrow into your soul and almost mesmerise you, such is its unique, ethereal beauty. It is an absolute joy to have her back.
