Charlie Needs Braces is the latest project from Naarm-based musician Charlie Woods. A proud GuriNgai woman and direct descendent of Bungaree and Matora, Woods’ music blends contemporary electronic pop sounds with First Nations language and stories.
This Wednesday Charlie Needs Braces releases new single ‘This Land’, but today you can listen to it and watch the video exclusively here on Women In Pop.
Against an eclectic soundscape that features the trumpet, birdsong and a deep house breakdown, ‘This Land’ celebrates First Nations people’s connection to Country and the importance of learning the individual history behind names and places. ‘Whose land are you standing on?…what nation? / What mob? / Whose clan are you living on?’ she sings.
Created by Woods with Master Kapow, the music video for ‘This Land’ features Woods and backing vocalist Miri Woods amidst a collage of images of animals and plants from old National Geographic magazines, alongside famous landmarks, street signs and a map of Australia showing the traditional names of all parts of the country.
Charlie Needs Braces have a special talent for creating music that is uplifting, joyous and never fails to bring a smile to your face, but also brings home to you an incredibly powerful message of First Nations stories and the importance of protecting Country and our planet.
