New Zealand alt-pop star ratbag burst onto the music scene just over a year ago with her debut EP why aren’t you laughing? It attracted attention globally, from the BBC through to Triple J, and garnered streams in the millions.

She has just released her new single ‘pinky girl’, a charming alt-indie-pop track which has echoes of the 1980s indie sound. The song acts as a conversation piece to her previous release, the electothrash ‘pinky boy’.

With a discography that mixes punk, rock, indie, shoegaze and pop without ever being a slave to the sonics of each genre, ratbag is a brilliant artist whose musical world will both intrigue and enchant you. After completing two headline shows in Australia, ratbag dropped by the Women In Pop podcast to chat to Jett Tattersall about the creation of ‘pinky girl’, her creative journey and the world she builds around her art.
