Warnindhilyagwa woman Emily Wurramara today releases her second album Nara (meaning “nothing” in Anindilyakwa language) and she joins the Women In Pop podcast to chat to Jett Tattersall all about it.
Created over five years, it is an album full of heart, soul, power and emotions and its soundscapes are at times breathtaking. Wurramara effortlessly spans genres, from dancefloor ready electronic pop, to rock, blues, soul and country.
Lyrically it tells a story of enduring hardship and pain but coming out the other side with the realisation and celebration of your own strength. It was initially inspired after she suffered a devastating house fire which left her with nothing. “I had this realisation that when I had nothing, I actually had everything.” As such, the album title may mean ‘nothing’ in her language, but the album itself has everything, encompassing many of the experiences we go through as human beings, with Wurramara saying the album for her is a creative rebirth.
Since Wurramara first came to attention in 2016 with her debut EP Black Smoke she has steadily gained critical acclaim for her music, alongside over 16 million streams on Spotify alone. Nara is undoubtedly her finest creation to date, and showcases her remarkable skills as an artist - from writing to singing she is someone who excels across the board, A deeply moving, connective and satisfying album, Wurramara’s next musical chapter may well just be one of the finest collections you will hear this year.
