Sydney singer, songwriter and producer Jordan Laser today releases her new single, the stunning ‘Battleship’. A brooding gem of a track that wraps a thudding synth bassline with swirling melodies and a top drawer vocal performance from Laser that effortlessly switches between direct and nuanced to dreamy and ethereal. It is a song that reveals new layers with every listen, becoming more and more compulsive and marks Laser out a seriously important new voice in Australian pop.
“‘Battleship’ is about both disillusionment and acceptance,” says Laser. “On the one hand, the fantasy of who you wanted someone to be has caught up with the reality of who they really are and that’s an incredibly painful realisation. On the other hand, you’re accepting your fate. You’ve chosen this and so there’s some part of you that is coming into a state of grace about that.”
Naming her musical heroes as Kate Bush, Massive Attack and Stevie Nicks, Laser has been dedicated to music from a very young age. She started playing the piano at the age of 7 and was writing songs at 13, recording and releasing her debut EP in 2013, helmed by none other than Jim Moginie and Rob Hirst from Midnight Oil. Laser then chose to step away from a career as a recording artist to focus on becoming a producer. She is now back in front of the microphone with a renewed confidence and focus which is shining through on ‘Battleships’.
‘Battleship’ is out now across all platforms.
