INTERVIEW: Peach PRC on her Red Bull Mystery Band performance with 'Secret'

Peach PRC is one of Australia’s brightest pop stars and she recently released her new single ‘Secret’, an intoxicatingly brilliant synthpop track with an underlying current of melancholy as the lyrics tell of being with someone who wants to keep your relationship a secret.

Peach recently appeared on Red Bull Mystery Band, a musical series where a musician turns up to perform one of their songs with no idea who the band will be, or what genre they will play the song in. The series has previously seen performances from G Flip and A.Girl.

Turning up to the studio to perform ‘Secret’, Peach found her ‘secret’ band were all instrumentalists including a majestic harp, which gave the song a more dreamy, ethereal feel and also heightened the sense of melancholy in the lyrics.

We recently caught up with Peach to chat all about the performance, which you can view below.

Hi Peach! So good to chat with you, how is everything in your world right now?
everything in my world right now is magical

You have recently performed your latest single ‘Secret’ with the Red Bull Mystery Band. It was an incredible performance. First of all, what were you thinking when the curtain opened and you saw the harp?!
i have such a special place in my heart for harps there’s just something so intrinsically fairy about them so i felt right in my element when i saw it

It is such a beautiful rendition of the song, how do you feel about the final result?
initially i walked away feeling like i maybe played it too safe but listening back i really think it let the lyrics shine and it was actually a really beautiful version of the song

As an artist, is it difficult to to perform your song when you have no idea who the band are or how they are are going to play?
weirdly enough it was actually super easy but i think i’m used to having to switch it up cause i can only play a few chords so sometimes i’ll sing something over whatever i can play

After this experience, if you could perform another of your songs in a complete different style and genre, or as a collaboration with any other artist, what song would you choose and how would you perform it?
i would love to perform something in a country genre, cause country vocals are actually a hidden talent of mine. maybe forever drunk?

‘Secret’ is such a fantastic song, it has the classic Peach PRC synthpop sound which is absolutely joyous, but the lyrics are shot through with melancholy as you sing of a relationship you have to keep secret. Can you tell me a little about the inspiration behind and the creation of this track?
originally i wrote the song as a sexy fun “dirty little secret” vibe when i was sneaking around with this new love and i had the first verse there and took it to bonnie mckee to help me flesh out the concept. but we hit a bit of a wall with it (working over zoom gets like that) so we parked it for about a year and by then me and this girl were in love and together so the sneaking around wasn’t as thrilling and sexy anymore and that’s when i wrote the chorus which takes on a bit of a sad undertone and came back to bonnie and space primates to help me finish it insisting that we keep it an upbeat pop song

You have recently wrapped your national tour, what was that experience like?
The tour was a beautiful sparkly whirlwind of pink and glitter and fairy wings, it’s an experience so beyond my wildest dreams i didn’t even know i could have it

It has been a year since you released your debut EP Manic Dream Pixie, what do you have planned for your next musical releases?
i plan to release touchy subject just for the fans and not have it be this huge single push because i just want them to have it and it’s special to me. beyond that im going all in on the party pop and making the music i wanna hear in the world just stuff that’s camp, silly and fun, doesn’t take itself too seriously

Your Red Bull Mystery Band performance is out now, your tour has just wrapped up, what else is on the cards for you this year?
i have no idea what’s happening ever. i have a US tour coming up next and then i think the UK but who knows my head is empty
