Emalia releases incredible new single 'Mistake'
Today one of Australia’s stars-in-the-making Emalia releases her new single ‘Mistake’. The song is a remarkable, smooth R&B-pop track detailing the loss of first love. Lushly produced and expertly created, it is music on par with that released by some of the biggest artists in the world and proof Emalia has the talent, the voice and the presence to become one of our biggest singers in the coming years.
“‘Mistake’ is about the loss of first love, and the thoughts that cloud your mind when it’s over,” Emalia says of the track. “We ended it, I missed him, I learned to live without him, I owned my mistakes and grew from them. After a while, I was able to look back and recognise the part I played in the relationship and how to do better next time. I had tried to write songs about the subject matter for years… but sometimes I struggle with putting into words how I am feeling when I am still deep in my emotions. With hindsight, I can create distance and truly reflect.”
‘Mistake’ was written and produced with One Above (Kota Banks, Hilltop Hoods), who also worked on her last single ‘IOU (feat. Guapdad 4000)’. “The writing process happened completely organically; we weren’t intending to do a session but One Above was playing through some beats when this one came on, and I sang the hook instantly, lyrics and all… it just came out of me,” she says. “It was as if my subconscious mind was speaking to me, and I thought, “OH, so THIS is where we’re at right now. This is what I need to say”. We ended up skipping dinner and going in on it. I wrote the topline in 2 hours, then we recorded the vox in another 2 hours. It was a huge emotional release for me. Listening back to it that night, I knew I finally had the song I needed for that chapter of my life. For me, Mistake is closure.”
Also released today is the visualiser for ‘Mistake’. “I wanted to make a visualiser that captured a moment many of us are all too familiar with when experiencing grief. I’d cry on the floor of my shower thinking about him, so it felt only right to have ‘Mistake’ visually represented that way,” Emalia says of her inspiration behind the visuals.
Emalia will be performing with support from Marshes at the very first Women In Pop Live concert on April 8 at Oxford Art Factory in Sydney. Tickets are available now by clicking here. Her new EP Unmuted will follow on April 23. Stand by for much more incredible music from Emalia in 2021.
