Sydney producer and vocalist first broke through on the local music scene with her 2017 single ‘YOLO’, and addictive track missing electronica, R&B and tribal music. Last year she released the single ‘D.Y.S. (Defend Your Situation)’ which wrapped 1980s melodies and vibes around a thoroughly contemporary electropop banger. In February she released her latest single ‘Sidestep’, a bombastic anthem again cruising through a 80s electropop soundscape with effortless cool. We recently chatted to CLYPSO to find out more.

Hi CLYPSO! Thanks for chatting with us.  First up, how is everything in your world right now?
Things are cruising along, thanks for asking.

How did your career as a musician begin, what were the steps that you took to get it started?
I’ve always played organ, piano and other instruments in general. Been writing mini songs and compositions since I was a kid.  I’ve never really been a singer as such. But I started making beats and thought putting some vocals on it would be a good idea. Dropped it on Soundcloud and that was the start.

Your news single ‘Sidestep’ was released in February and is incredible! You have said it is about ‘that hottie you keep bumping into’, can you tell us more about the inspiration behind the track?
It all started after I wrote the bass line and the song literally came together from that moment, slowly building the drums and lyrics on that vibe. It’s a song to dedicate to a hot crush, both of you sidestepping and moving in circles, not directly telling the other that you’re into them. But the song also is about taking chances with anything in life really. Make a move, take a chance.

I detect a bit of an ‘80s feel to the track, both in the production and also in your vocals, was this a conscious decision?
80s pop songs seem to be really hooky and ear wormy and I think ‘Sidestep’ does have that quality about it. But in terms of production it wasn’t intentional.

You work as a songwriter, vocalist and producer, is there an aspect of the creative process that you enjoy the most?
Production and programming are what I enjoy the most because the initial idea is the most exciting part of the process for me.  You’re working on random ideas and they suddenly click. The idea that from nothing something has emerged still amazes me.

You are performing at Greener Pastures on the Gold Coast at the beginning of May, have you given any thought yet to your performance and what we can expect?

It’s an early afternoon set so I think some tropical sunny vibes will be the theme for my set.

What else can we expect from CLYPSO during 2020?
2020 and beyond for CLYPSO is really about making music and touring.

‘Sidestep’ is out now across all platforms
