CLEWS release new single 'Overluck'
CLEWS, also known as sisters Lily and Grace Richardson, have released the single ‘Overluck’ from their upcoming new EP Loveluck Omens which will be released on May 21st.
The song is a delicious indie-pop track with more emphasis on pop with its frenetic opening beats forming the bedrock of the track, which is interspersed with bursts of distorted electro sonics which brings to mind the work of trance acts like Massive Attack.
Lyrically the track explores the complexity of love and the fear of choosing a relationship out of fear of being alone as opposed to love : ‘when the bodies slow down and the babies grow up / Will I still die alone?…/ I would choose chemistry over luck’ they sing. “This song introduces the theme for the upcoming EP: being lucky in life but unlucky in love,” CLEWS say. “Songwriting is like sharing my feelings with myself, and I didn't realise how worried I was about being alone until I wrote ‘Overluck’. I reflect on being happy where I am in my life but wondering if I'm missing something because I've never been in love. The chorus is a powerful mantra for me as a woman - a reminder that I've made the right choices in my life and always have the power to choose my path. I am the architect of my happiness and pleasure, I don't have to be with anyone I don't want to be with. I will always choose a real spark over the fear of being on my own.“
The new sonic direction on this track was a conscious decision to take them out of their comfort zone the band say and is indicative of their desire to pull their sound in whatever direction that presents themselves to them. “Our producer Dylan Adams really helped us take ‘Overluck’ out of our guitar-driven comfort zone while keeping the bittersweet sound we always try to capture in our choruses,” they say. It’s become one of the all-time favourite songs we’ve made so far. All we want to do is make music that we love, that is driven by harmonies and with lyrics that people can hear themselves in.”
CLEWS have been releasing music since 2018 and have shown remarkable growth over the past three years, reflecting a growing confidence in their creativity. All the signs point to their EP Loveluck Omens being one of the highlights of the month and we can’t wait to hear it.
