Nussy's new single 'Down To Earth' is the summer dance anthem you need

Melbourne DJ and electro-pop singer Nussy has been working in music since she started DJ-ing at the age of 16. Over that time she has performed at multiple prestigious international events including Music Matters (Singapore), Canadian Music Week (Canada), Live At Heart (Sweden) as well as being commissioned to DJ for Melbourne Music Week and Melbourne Spring Fashion Week.
In 2017, she moved our from behind the decks and released her first single ‘Hard As Diamonds’, which was followed by four more single. In November this year she released her first single in over a year with ‘Down To Earth’. A euphoric electronic pop track, it is the type of expertly crafted song that evokes multiple sensations. Delicious melodies and synth pings are teamed with a beat that is straight from a dark nightclub at 3am plus Nussy’s nuanced vocals and a swirling soundscape that captures your attention from beginning to end.
“I wanted it to feel ethereal and almost a bit spacey (I love space!),” Nussy says. “When I started writing lyrics to the track, it felt so natural to write about connection. I feel like as a creative, we often get viewed like we have our head in the clouds but I liked the idea that even though you might be creative in your experiences, you still have this innate feeling of wanting to be connected to something or someone that makes you feel grounded.”
“I started DJing when I was about 16 but stepped away from it a bit to concentrate on my vocals and band work,” she continues. “When I got back into it, I started thinking that I’d love to be able to play my own tracks in my DJ sets so I started getting more into writing house and dance music which is why I wanted to work with Jack (Arentz aka HAXX). We worked on a few tracks, but ‘Down To Earth’ came so naturally. This was the second track I worked on with Jack. It was just before COVID hit so once we finished recording it, I kind of went into hibernation. I have always had a real soft spot for this track and am so proud of what we put together - I felt like it just had to be shared with the world.”
Nussy is a fantastic new talent with the ability to create pop music so full of joy you can lose yourself in its delights and forget the world for four minutes. ‘Down To Earth’ has everything you need to soundtrack your summer, and to celebrate it’s release, and tying in with its spacey theme, Nussy shared with us a listicle of her five favourite space movies!
Nussy’s top 5 best ever space movies - the good, the bad and the ugly
Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back: Can I just list five Star Wars films? BIG FAN! But in all seriousness, The Empire Strikes Back is the GOAT of all Star Wars films. It’s where we meet Yoda and the infamous “I am your father” line is delivered - it is ALL TIME!
2001: A Space Odyssey: Probably a really obvious choice but that’s because it’s brilliant. I think every time I watch it, I pick up something new or I see something in a new light. It was so ahead of its time and so provocative and HAL is probably the reason I am convinced robots will take over the world.
Apollo 13: I cannot watch this film and not cry. To get so close to achieving a life-long dream and it be taken away from you is just gut-wrenching to me. There’s a scene where they are looking out the window, passing by the moon, knowing they won’t get to land there - gets me every time.
E.T.: As a kid, I always felt a really strong connection to E.T. as a character. It sounds corny but I think it was probably because I had often felt like an outsider in my own world - that and the fact that people would constantly tell me I had ‘E.T. fingers’ because of my creepily long fingers (great for piano playing!) Years later, I found out that my dad had actually mentioned it when I was born too. It was also one of those ‘forbidden movies’ once my brother came along because he was terrified of what I thought was just a cute little creature, which made me want to watch it even more!
Gattaca: I actually studied this film when I was at school and was so fascinated by the entire notion of genetic manipulation and selective reproduction. Again we go back to this theme of someone dreaming something but coming up against hardship and not quite being able to get there (a real insight into my psyche here!) except in this case, he defies the odds and realises his dream!
