One of music’s most exciting new talents to emerge in the past few years mxmtoon (aka Maia) has announced today that her new album Rising will be released on May 20, as well as her first ever Australian and New Zealand tour in October.

The announcements come off the back of the release of her new single ‘sad disco’. As the title may suggest, the song is a glorious contemporary disco song full of electro-funk beats and irresistible melodies. It is a genre mxmtoon has always loved but has never brought to life so magnificently in her own music before. Lyrically, it tells a tale of a young girl finding escape from boredom and loneliness through music - and ABBA. In one way it is full of melancholy, but the flip side is an empowering message of finding peace through alone time and music and not needing anyone to feel whole.

“i was 17 years old when I wrote my song ‘prom dress.’ Four years later, I sat and listened to it, wondering if the lyrics and ideas still resonated with my now 21-year-old self,” mxmtoon says of the track. “I decided that it did, and it also didn’t. I’d grown up since I wrote that song and realised I wanted to make something that felt current to my individual. ‘sad disco’ was the resolution to that desire. A song built with the same bones that ‘prom dress’ was made from, but more reflective of the growth I’ve experienced in my own life since. It’s a song meant to make you find joy in the quiet, to emulate that feeling of being alone in your bedroom, blasting music through a pair of headphones in the middle of the night. In a way, it feels like an answer to the girl who wrote ‘prom dress’ in the first place, serving as a reminder that she isn’t stuck on the floor with tears streaming down her face forever, but that she’ll grow up, and the loneliness she sometimes feels won’t define her. She can still choose to dance and have her own ‘sad disco.’”

mxmtoon will perform her first ever shows in Australia and New Zealand in October this year to celebrate the release of Rising. Kicking off in Melbourne, the four show tour will wrap up in Auckland. "I’m so excited to be able to come to Australia this October!,” she says. “I’ve been wanting to play shows there for so long and it feels crazy that it’s finally able to happen. I am scared of the bugs though, I heard they are really big, so I may need some help!"

First releasing music in 2017, mxmtoon became one of the biggest stars of the new breed of ‘bedroom pop’ artists. Originally creating music in her parent’s guest bedroom at just 17, her music now racks up streams in the tens of millions and she has collaborated with major stars including G Flip and Carly Rae Jepson. With her latest music and upcoming album, mxmtoon is exploring new sounds and launching a creative rebirth that is going to be incredibly exciting to be a part of. “The old me was OK,” she sings on Rising closer ‘coming of age’. “But I think it’s time for something new.”
