Australian singer-songwriter Sasha March recently released her first single in several years ‘Can I Call’. Co-written with and produced by Tristan Jvmes, the song is a dreamy, lush electro-ballad which expertly blurs the line between heartbreak and love. There is an ambiguity in the lyrics which leaves it up to you to interpret the song to match your mood, whether that is crying out the ache of a lost love, or celebrating the support of a current love: “Can I call at one in the morning / When my mind is racing and I’m yearning?”

“‘Can I Call’ could be a dark place or a kind of comfort depending where you’re at. It could be a love song, or a place where you fight yourself as the super hero and the villain,” March says. “But there’s always hope that there’ll be someone or something to sober you and ground you again before the next round.”

Speaking of the creation of the track, March reveals it was a song that she had initially set aside, unfinished, some time ago. “I left it aside for ages and then eventually took it to Sydney Producer Tristan Jvmes last year,” she says. “Tristan built up a bunch of ideas sonically and each time his production developed, I’d do another vocal take. This was a fun process which went on for a few months until we found together what the song meant and eventually I did a vocal take I was happy with. We lost count of the different versions, but landed on the final loved one and sent it off to be mastered by Harvey O’Sullivan at Studio 301 in Sydney.”

Her first single since 2020, March has made an impressive return and with her remarkable creativity and exquisite vocals to die for, we are looking forward to more music from her. To celebrate the release of ‘Can I Call’, March has written a list of her favourite songwriters exclusively for Women In Pop.

5 songwriters Sasha March loves

Hannah Joy - Middle Kids
She’s such a good story teller and her voice is so powerful.

The melodies are always so dynamic with big singalongs. I love the intimate moments of her voice and lyrics too and the way the band holds those moments then builds and everything soars perfectly. Every song is so well crafted and takes you on an adventure, always great because her performance feels super genuine.

Emma Louise

I particularly love her performance on the album Lilac Everything. The production and choices are really enchanting. Her lowered vocals are so surprisingly stunning, like they were always meant to be. Feels effortless and held.

Lyrically she’s so tender and heartbreaking and that’s comforting.

I guess melancholy is attractive and beautiful because it’s permission to fall apart for a moment. I feel she does that so well.

Sharon Van Etten

There’s a darkness to her work which I really love and when her vocals open up there’s an urgency and rawness which is tingling. I first felt that on her track ‘Seventeen’ from the album Remind Me Tomorrow and  I became totally obsessed. I was already a big fan via her track ‘Everytime The Sun Comes Up’ from the album Are We There with it’s cheeky lyrics and chill vibe that rolls along so well…that chorus is such an earworm! I just really admire the evolution of her work and her vocal versatility.

Jess Cornelius

Such a laid back vibe to her voice like a super power that can’t really be described. It’s really intriguing. Her delivery is so brilliant and has attitude and tenderness.

I love the humour in her lyrics too as well as the struggle and intimacy.

I only recently discovered her through a friend and was immediately hooked after hearing her track ‘Cupcake Revisited’ from the album  Give Up On Your Health from her previous band Teeth & Tongue. That entire album is a Play, Repeat. Play, Repeat. Play, Repeat vibe.

Amelia Meath - Sylvan Esso

The playfulness in her voice and lyrics are so catchy and infectious. I love how perfectly her vocal plays off the production from Nick Sanborn in Sylvan Esso. It’s a beautiful glitchy flow.

The first time I heard Amelia’s voice was on their track ‘Coffee’. Then I discovered the trio she’s also in, Mountain Man, singing stunning harmonies. She’s so excellent in harmony and lead and is such a powerhouse in explosive moments that I can’t help singing along and getting on board!
