Sydney based, Papua New Guinean artist NGAIIRE today releases her powerful new single, ‘Fuchsia’ as well as announcing her rescheduled album tour will kick off this August.

The single is an entrancing electronic pop track which brings to mind some of the best tracks of the disco era when NGAIIRE’s powerful vocals soar to impassioned heights. Lyrically the song is a confronting exploration of being queer in Papua New Guinea, a country where homosexuality is still illegal. “They want to take me out the back and put a barrel up to my head / I want to testify before I die / That all I wanted was to feel like how I feel for you and I,” she sings.

“‘Fuchsia’ is about wanting autonomy on your choices, who you love, your body and the politics on acting on what society says is not allowed,” NGAIIRE says. “It’s about rebellion and that anyone can be a rebel if it’s taking a stand against any mass ideology which in turn could just be a truth not considered. A revolution even."

‘Fuchsia’ is a bonus track from NGAIIRE’s third album 3, which was released last year to critical acclaim and is due to be issued on vinyl in September. The album was born out of trip NGAIIRE made to Papua New Guinea in 2017 to extract unique visual aspects of her culture to present in a contemporary context alongside her music. It soon morphed into a journey of personal growth and discovery for NGAIIRE that found her creating some of the most open and honest music of her career. “This album is about me letting go and accepting that not everyone is gonna get me,” she said on the album’s release. “I don’t even want to be easily figured out anyway because being a multi-faceted woman of colour is perfectly acceptable even if it causes people to shift uncomfortably in their seats. For hundreds of years, we have been viewed through the legacy of white history and though this has plagued my entire career, it doesn’t make me.”

Featuring future-soul, electronic pop, piano ballads and hints of R&B, the album was nominated for four ARIA Awards and an AIR Award for Best Independent Pop Album. NGAIIRE celebrates 3 in August on her delayed Australian and New Zealand album tour which will see her play ten shows from August 26. Tickets are on sale now.

NGAIIRE is an artist of exceptional talent who creates music that is powerful, moving and perhaps most importantly talks about the big issues, whether it be a protest against societal constructs or embracing your sexuality. It is music that connects directly with you, NGAIIRE’s lyrics and supple and emotive vocals allowing you to find your own story within hers. ‘Fuchsia’ is a standout track in her portfolio and will resonate loudly with many.
