Julia Stone has today announced she will release her first Christmas album on 10 December Everything Is Christmas.
Released digitally, CD and on limited edition vinyl of only 1,000 copies personally signed by Julia the album features 14 Christmas songs reinterpreted in Stone’s unique style, including modern classics such as Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas and Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ and traditional carols including ‘Away In A Manager’ and ‘Joy To The World’.
“Christmas music has always been such a beautiful and nostalgic part of my life,” Stone says. “This is a record I’ve always wanted to make. It has been in me for so long. These are some of the very first songs that really got under my skin as a kid. Familiar like that favourite jumper you will never throw away. It has been a dream of mine to make a record of my favourite Christmas songs, with my favourite people.”
The album was recorded at Reservoir Studio in Midtown, New York with Julia behind the production alongside collaborator Thomas Bartlett (St Vincent, Norah Jones, Yoko Ono) who also produced her most recent solo record Sixty Summers. Also joining her on the record was singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Amidon, bass player and pedal steel player James Gilligan, Leigh Fisher on drums and Nico Muhly on strings.
“One New York winter, we all got together and, in a week, recorded these songs live. It was one of my favourite recording sessions,” Stone explains. “There’s a freedom and a beauty to singing songs you know, we all know, so well. I wanted to make that record. The way I felt those songs. And I wanted to make it with people that I felt inspired and comfortable with.”
To celebrate the release of the record and to bring Christmas cheer to her fans, Stone has also announced she will be performing a number of shows at the end of the year in Victoria and New South Wales. Tickets are on sale now.
“This record encapsulates my fondest childhood memories tinged by the reality that so many are forever missing from my life today,” Stone says. “I called the record, ‘Everything is Christmas’ because Christmas can hold one moment in time and a whole lifetime of memories. It marks the passage of time for us and for our people. Everything is a celebration, and everything is painful. Everything is love and everything can be lost. Everything is Christmas.”
