Alice Longyu Gao releases new single 'Kanpai'

Chinese-born, New York-and-LA-based producer, songwriter, DJ and multidisciplinary artist Alice Longyu Gao has released her latest single, 'Kanpai' (translated as 'cheers' in Chinese, Japanese and Korean).

A heady, frenetic rush of synth beats, thumping bass and whipsmart raps ‘Kanpai’ is an invigorating listen, perfect for bringing you some joy amongst lockdown torpor. My best friend Madison Emiko Love and I wrote this song three years ago,” Gao says. “Her grandma is a Japanese immigrant and we always want to champion and plug our culture everywhere we go. We’ve been waiting to put this song out, because back then no one with power in western music realised the power of Asian pop culture, no one really cared to put Asian talents on the table. The braggy-docious, rap-y bridge part in the song is what I wish for, it's not my reality yet. Last year was dark for me, and for everyone. But now it is time to regroup and restart, this song wakes me up in the morning, it reminds me that I came to this earth with a mission. I aspire to inspire and benefit other people’s lives. I do that through my art.”

Also released today is the video for ‘Kanpai’, directed by Olivia Aquilina. A colourful burst of energy, it brings a playful new spin to the burlesque of Dita von Teese.

Born in Bengbu, China, Gao moved to the US at age 17. Taking on internships in the magazine and fashion industries, she soon worked up to a career as a DJ in New York, in turn landing sets in Paris, Tokyo, Los Angeles and beyond, before launching her solo career in 2019. She has since gathered critical acclaim and found support from stars such as Lady Gaga and Zane Lowe.

With a truly unique look and sound that is completely invigorating and life affirming, Alice Longyu Gao is an artist that we guarantee you need in your life right now.
