Naarm/Melbourne based singer Mo•Louie has recently released new single ‘Signs’, her first new music in a year.
The songs sees Mo move her music into the electropop arena, with sparse electro beats, shimmering synths and distorted vocals giving the song both an undeniable groove and a hint of the ethereal and otherworldly. Lyrically the song looks at how the brain can interpret objects and ideas and attach meaning to them that may not actually exist.
“‘Signs’, for me, represent our brains delving deep into the meanings of inanimate objects & ideas (like horoscopes, myths or superstitions) in order for us to make sense of things, which is beautifully peculiar,” she says. “ Many times in my life, I have attached good or bad things that happened to me with a superstition or ‘sign’, and my mind goes wild trying to make connections. It has gotten a bit sinister at times, and I started believing these things so much that it would affect my life. I look back and reflect and see how powerfully creative your mind can become deciphering these fictions. I wanted to represent this with intricate & interesting synth sounds and samples, nostalgic moments, and a playground for the sounds going wild (like one’s mind). So I was very particular in creating the sounds and world for this song down to the very last detail.”
Mo•Louie first released music in 2016 with the R&B track ‘She Said’, the same year making it to the semi-finals of The International Songwriting Competition. She has since released a number of singles, with her debut mixtape An Odd World dropping in 2020. A wonderfully talented and versatile artist, Mo’s music has encompassed R&B, techno inspired dance music, experimental electronica and now electro pop.
